iRacing- Dave Kaemmer Comes Clean on Dirt
iRacing has posted a very interesting and very detailed interview with Dave Kaemmer discussing the difficulty’s and impracticality’s of creating dirt tracks from a developers standpoint.
Q: As a motorsports simulation developer what goes through your mind when you see a member of iRacing asking for dirt racing?
A: I always think about the technical issues first—mostly surface modeling, and graphics. Then I think about how cool it would be—and it would be pretty cool. Then I wonder about opportunity costs—might we be better off doing something else?
In the interview they discuss many of the challenges that would be faced such as the impractical method of laser scanning the dirt tracks only getting basic topography and examples of surface ruts where as developers would have to work out how to allow cars to modify the track surface to introduce these ruts and bumps like real life dirt oval racing.
